The artist Cheung Tat Ming, whose name always reminds people of his humorous and outstanding ‘animalization’ performances in comedies, has been amusing audiences of all ages. Last year, his role as a homeless man in the movie I’m Livin’ It earned him the Best Supporting Actor title at the Hong Kong Film Awards. His acting skill is beyond question. Not only is he a performer, but he is also an accomplished director and screenwriter. In 1992, his work Far Way Home won the Best Director and Best Original Script at the first Hong Kong Drama Awards. Having been in showbiz for 30 years, he devotes his life to art and creation. One of the breakthroughs is integrating interactive installation art into his plays, which has impressed the industry. In recent years, he also served as an instructor for drama courses at Hong Kong Baptist University to cultivate talents.
In recognition of his great contribution, the Hong Kong tourbillon watch brand Memorigin sincerely invited Mr. Cheung to work hand in hand and promote the Hong Kong spirits. With his experience and creativity, Mr. Cheung designed the Perform for Life tourbillon watch. It is inspired by his two favorite elements ‘drama’ and ‘art’. “I have a strong desire to create. I have been a playwright since graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Being an art enthusiast at the same time, I also studied sketching at Yale University in the United States. I am honored to have the opportunity to design the watch myself. I hope to share this beautiful art piece with everyone,” Mr. Cheung said.
Through the delicate embossing techniques, a man who wears a trilby is depicted on the dial abstractly. The illusory vortexes and wavy lines behind him present multiple layers and symbolize the infinite possibilities in life. To express the concept of the ups and downs in a dramatic life, there is a smiley face and a crying face on the minute and hour hand respectively. When either arrives at the 12 o’clock position, the mask will cover up the face of the man, bringing various emotions. “Life’s stressors are inevitable. I approach hardship in a more productive way. I feel more fulfilled when I get to work on my favorite creations and bring joy to others. I was very afraid when I was diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately, I had the support and care from my doctors, family, and friends. I managed to win the battle,” Mr. Cheung shared. He purposely placed the smiley face on the minute hand as it reaches the 12 o’clock position 22 times a day, while the cry face only reaches it twice. It means that hopes are always there and living a happier life is within reach.
To make this collaboration more meaningful, Cheung Tat Ming and Memorigin will donate a part of the proceeds in the project to organizations that help cancer patients. They will be provided with medical, rehabilitation, and financial assistance. It also encourages them to face the illness with a never-give-up attitude. The watch is equipped with a tourbillon movement with 40 hours of power reserve and a vibration frequency of 28,800 oscillations per hour, generating energy as well as positivity.
